Chi-Africa is a UK company based in Chichester that supports Zimbabwean artists by buying handmade sculptures made exclusively from reclaimed metal. Chi-Africa has been in operation since 1999 and has seen the impact of its support change the lives of their artists enabling them to build homes and set real foundations for their families.
Chi-Africa ethos is Recycled. Reused. Reclaimed.
Angela Reed has been buying from Chi-Africa for nearly a decade. Not only are Chi-Africa sculptures a perfect fit for our customers with their unique quirkiness and quality craftsmanship, but the knock-on is widespread and genuinely benefits the artists and their communities.
It is always best to check your sculpture and use your judgement to see if it needs a fresh coat of the varnish or a quick spray of clear lacquer.
We recommend a coating of Yacht Varnish in the autumn so the coat is at its thickest throughout the winter. Please ensure that the sculpture and the brush are both dry before painting on the varnish. If there is moisture on either you will end up with a white paste on the sculpture.
A top-up spray of either WD40 or clear lacquer can then be applied as and when needed. Again please ensure the sculpture is dry before application. If the sculpture is near a pond, remove it from the area before spraying.
What to do If you have left the sculpture in the garden with no maintenance and the sculpture has started to rust :
Bring the sculpture inside and allow it time to fully dry. Take an old dry kitchen pad and gently rub off any odd bits of rust. Then apply the yacht varnish as a base coat. Once dry place it back in the garden and regularly maintain it.
It is recommended that all sculptures are fixed to the ground when outside, on grass the easiest fixing is to use a tent peg. If you wish to fix your sculpture to wood then a U-Nail or staple is suggested.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Please note that all items are individual and as such the item you receive may vary from the item depicted.
Due to the metal being recycled some sculptures may have sharp edges which can cause harm to persons if not treated with care, please note Angela Reed and or its representative will not be held responsible if any harm is caused by one of the sculptures.
These sculptures are not toys and are therefore not suitable for children.
This item can be used outside, if you’d like the finish to remain as you purchase it then we recommend re-applying a clear varnish each year such as yacht varnish.
